New breast cancer center receives $1.5 million donation

About $1.5 million raised as a result of the Rays of Hope Walk Toward the Cure of Breast Cancer will be donated to a new center at the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute, according to MassLive.com.

According to the report, about 40,000 women died from breast cancer last year. The new medical facility will be dedicated to curing the disease while promoting treatment and prevention in the process.

“We are just beginning to unlock clues as to whether obesity and breast cancer may be linked, and what those links could mean for prevention, diagnosis and management of the disease,” said Joseph Jerry, who has been appointed science director of the new center.

In the 17-year history of the Rays of Hope Walk, more than $9 million have been raised. The report indicates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and one in 35 women will die from the disease.

While there are premarker genes that can provide some indication of one's risks for developing breast cancer, maintaining a healthy lifestyle - both physically and socially - is important and has been linked to decreased breast cancer rates.
